I have been trading bonds and other fixed income instruments for the last 15 years. I have been with Renaissance for the last seven years, having previously worked at Troika Dialog and Credit Suisse.
Renaissance is the number one player in its field – high-opportunity emerging markets. I was attracted to the company because I would like to be the number one player in my field. The best way to do this is to work for the number one.
The people who thrive here are entrepreneurs and result-orientated people. The culture is ambitious and there is an unbelievable determination to beat the competition.
My working day starts at 10am with a morning meeting to check the pulse of the market. I am in the center of informational flow that is coming from sales, traders, and research all day. We spend most of the day assessing the change in various asset classes and position against the client flow. Clients are our biggest asset after our people, so we have to make sure we add value wherever possible. I usually finish between 8pm and 9pm and am ready for a night’s client entertainment.

I started my career at Merrill Lynch before moving onto JP Morgan and then joining Renaissance Capital in 2002. I saw this as an opportunity to work in a more dynamic firm, where you have the chance to really make a difference in what you do.
I like the people working here and the company’s corporate culture encourages you to be original and creative in your role. All the people around me are true professionals, so all you need to do is learn from their experiences.
I have been here for almost seven years. My career has progressed as the company has grown so being a part of Renaissance Capital’s rapid growth has, for me, been a personal journey.
The busy nature of my job means that organization is important. It also requires being able to communicate well and keep a clear head under pressure. The diversity of each day never ceases to surprise me: one moment you’re working with Russia and the next you’re trading in Nigeria, then maybe Kazakhstan.
I am usually in the office by 9.30am, looking at what has happened overnight on the New York and Asian markets. I then attend the morning meeting, discussing the day’s important topics, new research data, and news. Then I talk to my clients, finding out what they’d like to do today and acting on their requests. At around 8pm I generally leave the office for home or the bar – depending on how the day has gone!
When I’m not working I like listening to music, playing tennis and golf, which all help me to relax. I also enjoy travel, with a trip to the mountains and jungles of South America a recent highlight.

I chose investment banking as it is the most challenging and competitive field within the financial industry. Renaissance was the obvious choice as a dominant player in the Russian market.
I believe I was selected because I proved that I share Renaissance’s core values. My advice to anyone thinking of joining the Group would be to take any chance you get to talk to people from the business and choose the area which suits you best.
The levels of training and support here are exceptional. There is a rule in Renaissance – when you ask for support, you get double support. My colleagues are people who motivate me to develop further.
Renaissance also provides you with the opportunity to keep on learning. Even when you are a full-time employee you can still take part in many financial workshops to keep developing your knowledge of the business.
Renaissance Capital gives you real exposure to the booming Russian market, and as a part of the investment banking team you can gain unique experience and understanding of the business and processes that drive it. The toughest thing in the profession is the working hours – but in Renaissance the rewards are great enough to make it worthwhile.
Being an investment banker is a time consuming job, so I really appreciate my spare time – which I love to spend with family and friends.

I joined Renaissance because it is a leading investment bank focused in emerging markets. It also had a compelling vision: to build a world class investment banking platform delivering value to clients across Africa.
Renaissance has already committed significant resources in the continent, which underscores the Firm’s belief in the African story as the ‘second once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’. I wanted to be part of this African Renaissance revolution.
I’m now Vice President of Debt Capital Markets – Africa, responsible for origination of transaction opportunities covering debt capital markets (public bond issues), illiquid assets, structured credit and equity-linked products.
A typical day in the office involves meeting clients, pitching funding proposals to address their needs, negotiating with parties on transaction documentation and managing deal execution, managing investor reverse inquiries, interviewing prospective candidates, rushing to the airport to catch a late night flight, waking up in a completely different environment… and wondering if it was all a dream! In that respect, no two days are ever the same. The experience from day to day is incredibly varied!
This place has a dynamic culture and people. It is a lot less bureaucratic than other banks and it empowers individuals to achieve results. It is also unambiguously meritocratic. The working atmosphere is ambitious, nimble, relentless and results driven.
At Renaissance, one simply has to be a self-starter and go-getter, not relying on direction from the ‘establishment’. That entrepreneurial attitude provides immense opportunity for talent to flourish, and also instils a culture characterised by a winning attitude. Being able to build consensus and work reliably as part of a team is also crucial to success.
When it comes to training, the best thing is getting to work directly with senior management on strategic projects of high importance. This is a real hands-on learning opportunity. You can get thrown in at the deep end and have to learn to overcome significant challenges, but not without support from managers.
There is also structured product training available as well as internal training tailored to suit individual requirements.
When not working I like to play golf, spend time with family or take clients out to watch live English Premier League action at Renaissance’s VIP hospitality box at Stamford Bridge. Being a Chelsea fan, this is an invaluable fringe benefit!

I joined Renaissance Capital in 2004 after seven years with Credit Suisse First Boston in equity research. I have always been an equity analyst, but have covered many different sectors and countries throughout my career
I made the move to Renaissance because I was ready for new challenges. Russia was a different place then, and Renaissance Capital was still a work-in-progress. I wanted to use the skills I had to make an impact in an organisation where this would be required, recognised and rewarded
This is a place for achievers: the culture is entrepreneurial, and the thing that defines our character is the pursuit of excellence.
I would say that Renaissance Capital is unique – it is a place where one is both motivated and empowered to do things beyond the norm. Bureaucracy is low and important decisions are made quickly.
My work day starts early. At home I check any overnight news and read newspapers. I then prepare comments for the stories which might be relevant for our daily morning meeting. The rest of it is different every day – writing reports, speaking to clients and managing staff.

I joined Renaissance because the company provides such exceptional opportunities for development and I wanted to build a career here. The atmosphere is incredibly supportive and friendly. If you ask for advice you can always find it among your colleagues or management.
My role calls for sociability, stress-resistance, loyalty, a sense of humor, and a good understanding of what clients need and how they like to be treated.
My day revolves around liaising with my clients and resolving their queries. I can say one thing about my role: it never gets boring.
When I’m not at work I like to play with my daughter, who’s recently turned two and is a lot of fun to be around. I also enjoy reading books and skiing.

I was keen to join Renaissance because it’s one of the biggest investment banks in CIS and working here gives you good career development opportunities and excellent experience in the sphere of the brokerage business.
In my role, you need good communication skills, the ability to handle stress, good product knowledge, an analytical capability, and leadership skills.
A typical day starts with a press overview and preparing comments for the opening of tenders. I use this to write another comment later and take into account all the market tendencies. I have meetings devoted to issues around client service during the day in and outside the office. At the end of the day I review what has happened, enter client trading into the system and make plans for the next day.
The pace of working in Renaissance is really fast, and requires quick decision-making. But we have a highly professional team ready to help in solving any problems. In our department the working atmosphere is very supportive.

Before joining Renaissance Capital I worked as a credit risk analyst at OTP bank in Ukraine. Before that I was a specialist at FUIB’s corporate business department in Kiev.
Joining Renaissance was a great opportunity to improve my knowledge in debt and capital markets, given the leading positions of Renaissance Capital.
My role is to cover various risk aspects of Renaissance Capital’s activities in Ukraine. These include credit risk assessment, risk control and front-office support, and risk evaluation of various transactions and trading schemes.
Those who thrive here are business-oriented people not afraid of taking responsibility. The flexible business model lets you react swiftly to challenges as they arise, and there’s minimal bureaucracy. It’s not like most Ukrainian banks where you struggle with the system.
It’s a multinational community of professionals and talented graduates that have common goals and are ready to support each other.

I am currently the Financial Director of Renaissance Capital, having previously occupied the same role at Ernst & Young. I started my career as an accounting clerk at Arthur Andersen back in 1994 – and rose through different levels and areas within the Finance Department to eventually become the Financial Manager/Controller.
I joined Renaissance because I wanted to be in a dynamic environment, working with interesting people and also wanted to move into the field of investment banking.
My day-to-day duties here include supervision of financial matters such as financial accounting, management accounting, financial analysis, budgeting and planning.
I would say the kinds of people who thrive at Renaissance are real decision makers, people committed to what they do and to achieving high results. It also helps if you’re able to think differently – and outside of the box.
The culture and character of Renaissance is one of dynamism and aiming for results. It’s a much more entrepreneurial and dynamic environment than the places I have worked in before, with a slightly more driven culture, with fewer bureaucratic procedures – and certainly more interesting people around.

The qualities needed for this role include a strong decision-making ability, teamwork skills, accuracy and a target-oriented approach.
I chose to join Renaissance Capital because it is the leading and perhaps the most dynamic company in the investment banking market in Russia.
I especially like the entrepreneurial atmosphere here. There are a lot of challenges here. If you’re going to join Renaissance, you need to be ready for them.

The nature of Renaissance’s business means my role is wonderfully varied. The pace at which the business is evolving means that everybody’s roles keep changing and adapting but, for me, that keeps the job entertaining. The support network is also really strong at Renaissance and there is always someone to turn to for advice. Renaissance is also strongly committed to career development, and the opportunities here are far greater than at any other firm I’ve worked for.
There’s a real energy and drive and at times it can be very fast paced. That said, I feel completely supported in my role and know that I always have someone to turn to if I need help.
My manager constantly guides me and supports me in my role and I’m actively encouraged to attend training courses and seminars that relate to my role. Renaissance takes personal and career development very seriously and each year we set objectives and goals and determine how the business can help us to achieve them.
With the business moving into new markets all the time, adaptability is key. The ability to summarise lengthy regulations succinctly is also important, as is drafting policies and procedures and keeping them up to date. Good communication and decision-making skills are also important, particularly when it comes to requesting KYC documentation from clients. A little persistence is also called for at times!
The diversity in my role means no two days are the same – the Compliance Officer role at Renaissance is really all-encompassing. Whilst I specialize in AML/KYC, I’m also responsible for FSA registrations, training and competence and gifts and inducements. In any one day, I could be completing FSA registration forms, drafting a policy on politically exposed persons, advising Account Management on KYC requirements for a hedge fund in the Caymans, or reading through client documentation from Kazakhstan. At the moment, I have a few projects around the business entering the African markets, so I’m familiarizing myself with the various African stock exchanges and regulatory systems.
Working with the emerging markets was entirely new to me when I joined Renaissance and I’m always confronted with new scenarios and new challenges. It’s all rather exciting when the firm does an IPO and we advise from a KYC/AML perspective. That can be particularly fast paced and challenging.

I have spent many years advising on cross-border investments in the emerging markets – with Clifford Chance and Credit Suisse in London, Moscow and Tokyo and then with White & Case in Moscow and Almaty. I joined Renaissance in 2008.
My work here involves supporting the transactional work of the Almaty and Moscow teams; drafting and negotiating transactional documentation from start to finish of the deal. In addition, I liaise with other business support groups to provide full support to our business colleagues; and build relationships with regulatory authorities and other government bodies regarding our business in Kazakhstan.
I was attracted to Renaissance by its unique geographical diversity, the strength of its vision, and its focus and expertise in the emerging and frontier markets.
The atmosphere here is business-focused, creative and entrepreneurial. It is more dynamic and less bureaucratic than many other organizations. It expects dedication and results from its employees and, in return, richly compensates talent and offers the support of a like-minded community of professionals.
People who thrive here are those who, regardless of background, are leaders in their field, who excel and who want to be number one.

My role entails managing all of the global offices that Renaissance uses; managing the provision of all the support services in each of these locations and managing the procurement of particular services.
For me there is no such thing as a normal day: every day brings with it new challenges. Some larger than others!
As Renaissance expands we have been rolling out new offices and accommodation in locations all around the world and this brings with it many, many challenges.
The thing I enjoy most about my role is working on such a global platform and doing things that have never been done before. We are pioneers. For example we opened offices in Lagos equipped to the very highest standards you would find anywhere in the world, including London or New York. Achieving that was an immense challenge. We are doing the same thing all around the world, in places like Almaty, where we have to virtually teach the entire industry, from architects, engineers and property developers through to contractors and suppliers about the kind of standards we expect.
We are pioneers and the eyes of the world are following us. So if you join Renaissance, then you are also a pioneer. I had worked all over the world before joining the company. But since coming here, I have travelled to a huge variety of new places I had never even considered going to before.
I am a qualified accountant and have spent around twenty-five years working all around the world, in just about every major financial capital. I have worked with JPMorgan and Barclays Capital before starting my own consultancy.
Immediately before joining Renaissance I was working for ICI Paints and the atmosphere there was very sleepy compared to the world of investment banking. In truth, I missed the fast pace of investment banking and that is one of the main reasons I joined Renaissance. The culture here is dynamic, fast, aggressive and results-oriented. It is a culture that is very demanding, but the rewards are very high, especially for high achievers.
It is also a very collegiate atmosphere: people know each other and know where other people fit into the scheme of things. You don’t really find that in the major corporates where I had worked before.
Here at Renaissance people are treated as professionals no matter what their role or background. For a global financial institution that is very important but also quite impressive. The company is all about employing the best people and developing them as much as possible.

Before joining Renaissance I worked at the Ministry of Foreign Trade, for Joint Ventures, for the Mannai Corporation, Qatar (Moscow office), within Private companies, and for the Morgan Stanley Moscow office.
For me, Renaissance represented a new and exciting business and career opportunity in a strong, dynamic, leading Russian bank. One that is rapidly developing into a large first-class international financial institution.
The company is strong, ambitious and ready for adventure. It knows its strengths and can use them effectively, has clear aims, is determined to achieve them, and it's a company that knows teamwork is key to its success.
The people here are highly professional, dedicated, ready for a challenge, hard working, and enthusiastic.
Entrepreneurship is essential. The company is not afraid to be a pioneer in developing new businesses and exploring new regions. Quick decision-making is also important.
Corporate Services is a very busy world, and my day is full of meetings and correspondence about solving all sorts of issues. Everything from leasing and maintaining the buildings and services in them to relationships with landlords, to travel, budgeting, setting up cleaning, mail, printing and other soft services.
It keeps me very busy but it's all worth it, because this is the most exciting and the most challenging job I have ever had in my business career!
There are further career opportunities which arise in line with the rapid development of the company itself.

Renaissance is a professional, rapidly growing company, and that makes it very attractive from any perspective. It has a strong IT team and comfortable working atmosphere. Every employee has opportunities to study and grow within Renaissance.
I like the people here. My colleagues are bright, ambitious, active and sympathetic. Working in such an environment is very comfortable and helps keep me motivated to achieve my personal goals. The training and support are also exceptional. If I have a question or need help, I know I will get support.
My daily work is incredibly varied. From talking with business analysts and developers to co-ordinate and plan our IT development requests, to communicating with different areas of the business to understand our current tasks and priorities. I also try to dedicate several hours a day to working on my own projects.
The qualities you need most in my role include a strong sense of responsibility, attentiveness, excellent communication skills and the ability to make decisions quickly.
When not working, I love travelling. I like to explore new countries and get to know new people and their culture. I like going out with my friends, but sometimes I prefer just to stay home and spend my evening with an interesting book.

As a director responsible for global technology I spend almost half my time with the business leaders and their business managers. The rest is split between interacting with the IT manager and team leaders over tactical and strategic issues and projects. About a fifth of my time is spent on external communications – with vendors, professional associations, and industry colleagues.
I joined Renaissance in 2004, originally as the Head of Strategic Projects. In 2005, I was appointed Group Chief Information Officer.
Before joining Renaissance, while with BearingPoint (formerly KPMG Consulting) I managed a variety of IT strategy development, enterprise integration and data warehousing projects for a wide range of financial services, telecoms and government sectors in the US, Russia and CIS.
One of the things that attracted me most to Renaissance was the enormous opportunities in the markets where we operate and the fact that Renaissance is the leading player. I saw an opportunity to create a world-class investment bank technology platform competing with the top tier global players.
The people here have energy, dedication and drive. The culture is very dynamic, and positively charged.
The level of responsibility and authority that people are willing to take is outstanding. You can really make the difference working at Renaissance. You’ll need to show initiative and be ready to take responsibility, but organisationally the Firm has a flat structure providing easy access to senior level executives.

As the Global Head of Internal Audit, my job is to keep an eye on what is happening across the Renaissance Group globally, so we make sure we are auditing the right things and the bank has a good control environment. Some days are spent travelling to overseas offices, others are spent in general relationship management meetings finding out what is going on. There is also time spent with my audit team who will be working through our annual audit plan.
I have worked in both operations management and internal audit for over 25 years. My previous employers include Royal Bank of Scotland, JP Morgan, and Bankers Trust.
The thing that first attracted me to Renaissance was the opportunity to build an audit department from scratch. I joined because there was a real ‘can do’ attitude from all of the people I met here. I also felt that the internal audit department could make a real difference to the success of the Group.
The culture is informal, entrepreneurial and fast moving. It can be a bit rough and ready sometimes but that is a good thing. It is certainly different to the other banks I have worked for.
The speed at which we get things done sometimes is impressive. Our drive into new markets, changes to our business, and the personal growth of individuals all happens much quicker than at other companies I have worked for.
The people who thrive here are self-starters, those with a positive attitude and a desire to grow both personally and with the company.
